It is the the quality of life we want to increase as our life expectancy increases.

Alice Saland, MA, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. For many women, this would be a huge setback. Instead, Alice treated it as an opportunity, and took her knowledge of physiology, kinesiology and exercise science and combined it with her own personal recovery experience to produce a fitness video for other women recuperating from breast cancer surgery.

Alice Saland became active in the corporate fitness industry in the early 80’s. Then a certified aerobic instructor, she visited Fortune 500 companies in NYC during lunch breaks and after work, where she instructed group fitness programs. She was also Director of The Aerobic Program at Bio-Fitness Institute in Midtown Manhattan. Alice has been featured as a Fitness Entrepreneur in US Magazine, and has been a contributing writer for McCall’s Magazine.

HER STORY

80’s

Alice became active in the corporate fitness industry in the early 80’s. Then a certified aerobics instructor, she visited Fortune 500 companies in NYC during lunch breaks and after work, where she instructed group fitness programs. She was also Director of The Aerobic Program at Bio-Fitness Institute in Midtown Manhattan. Alice has been featured as a Fitness Entrepreneur in US Magazine and has been a contributing writer for McCall’s Magazine.

2000

In 2000, Alice produced an exercise video for breast cancer survivors, Alicethenics: Exercises To Increase Freedom Of Movement After Breast Surgery, with AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. They gave 20,000 videos to cancer treatment centers and oncologists throughout the United States as a premium item. During this time, Alice was a guest speaker at Mayo Clinic, St. Francis Hospital in Peoria, Gilda’s Club in New York City, Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, Miraval Resort & Spa, and others.

90’s

In the 90’s Ms. Saland moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where she wrote a weekly Fitness Column for The Albuquerque Journal North, “Ask Alice About Fitness and Fashion”. She continued her work in fitness, becoming a certified personal trainer. After a lumpectomy and axillary node dissection, Alice created exercises to support her own recovery and support other women post breast surgery. She held the first weekly exercise program at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Santa Fe.

2006

Alice relocated to Arizona in 2006 and guest-hosted weekly fitness segments on local television. She produced and was the voice of Alicethenics: Exercises For The Visually Impaired for Sun Sound Studios. Alice also hosted workshops, lectures and seminars on fitness. In-home personal training for women, with a focus on breast cancer recovery exercises, evolved as a result of her media exposure.

2019

Living again in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a request from a Physical Therapist that specializes in lymphedema inspired Alice to reshoot the video Alicethenics: Exercises to Increase Freedom of Movement after Breast Surgery in high-definition to be streamed online, making it accessible and available to people worldwide in their homes and on-the-go. This twentieth anniversary special edition includes updated footage, additional support techniques for healing and a new guided meditation.
